At the Learning Resource Center we are instructed to leave all computers powered on overnight, so that they can be updated if necessary. Considering that the updates take place only rarely, this policy results in an enormous amount of wasted energy. At a time when the campus is supposed to be "going green," I wonder if we might find some way to reduce our carbon footprint in this area.

i agree with "~karlsej" the computers staying on all night is a huge waste of energy. if don't see any evidence of updating in the LRC computers or anywhere else on campus. if the technology people want to set up an update time, they can set up a server to do it and have the computers set up to "wake on LAN."

How about keeping the software in the labs up to date. I work in the Mac CAD Lab, and the PCs in there have an old version of Internet Explorer that doesn't even support tabbed browsing. The last time I was on an LRC computer, it was the same there.
We should also have a choice of browsers. Firefox is an excellent browser and uses much less resources compared to Internet Explorer. Google Chrome is also a great slim browser.

I'm not sure if SCC is considering upgrading to Office 2007 (or 2008 for Macs), but I would like to suggest that SCC save money and support open source software. Open Office 3 is an excellent alternative to Microsoft Office and supports all MS Office formats including the new XML based formats (.docx, .xlsx, etc.).
I hear from many students that the new GUI in MS Office 2007 is confusing. Open Office 3 is much easier to use, with a GUI more similar to Office 2003. Best of all it's FREE!

SUPPORT A GREENER EDUCATION EXPERIENCE!
These days, everyone should be doing everything they can to reduce their carbon footprint. One way we can do this is by adding "Print to PDF" functionality to all the computers. The Macs as well as any other computers with Adobe Acrobat Professional Installed already have this function. Signage could then be posted by the GoPrint Terminals explaining the alternative.
Not only would this option save paper, toner, and energy, it would also save students a lot of money. When we have to do research, having the ability to print our findings to PDF would be excellent.

For the Mac Lab and GCOM classrooms. The new software coming out, Adobe CS4 among others is made to run optimally on the new Mac X86 architecture. Can we get new Intel Mac Pros w/ Xeon processors and at least 3GB of RAM so they aren't out of date next year!
